Whether you have a wood stove or a fireplace, cleaning the ash out is something we all have to do, and what better way to do that than with a hand-forged ash shovel?
The handle is made of 3/8″ mild steel and 16 gauge sheet metal for the ash pan. The handle is attached with 2 hand-forged rivets to secure it in place.
You will find the handle very comfortable. It fits naturally in your hand allowing you to get a good grip. This is a tool I use for 6-7 months out of the year so I made sure it’s good at its job and is comfortable to use.
Shovel pan measures 5″ wide and 6 1/2″ deep making it a great size for cleaning out your fireplace or wood stove.
There are two lengths available. The standard length is approximately 28″ which is long enough for what you need without being too long. I also have a 36″ length for those who have deep fireplaces.
Twist
I put a twist in the center of the ash shovel, or no twist if you prefer. Below are the twist options and you can check the pictures for reference.
- No Twist – No twist is done to the center of the fire poker and it remains square.
- Plain – A plain twist is the fire poker twisted to give a classic look.
- Veined – This twist is done with all 4 sides chiseled first and then twisted to give a veined look which adds depth.
- Reverse – A reverse twist is like a plain twist only that the twist continues back and forth in opposing directions. It’s kind of mesmerizing.
- Stair – The stair twist is done by chiseling a line on all 4 sides and cutting in cubes on two opposing corners. It’s then twisted to give the look of a spiral staircase.

Thanks. You got the first redesign of that ash shovel I’ve been working on. I redid the ash pan itself to have more of a keyhole shape.
