A tent post hanger is a historic tool. It’s used to hang things from by attaching to a post. The back of the hanger slides around a post and then gravity does the rest. It will lean slightly forward and lock into place to keep it secure and allow you to safely hang whatever you need to from it. You can hang things like decorative signs, flags, even bird feeders, lanterns, coats…you name it!
Forged with 3/8″ solid steel and made to fit a 2×2″ post (1 1/2″ inside space). It works well on 2×4″s as well which is much more common. Being that this is 3/8″ solid steel means it’s strong and quite capable of holding a fair bit of weight. It’s not going to bend or snap on you.
It’s a great hanger for larger tents and canopies. Again, you just slide it around a post and you’re done. You don’t need to screw it in or nail it in place. This makes it great for temporary use. The picture you see is my own hanger that I have in my wood shed. I don’t have electricity in the shed so I use this with a lantern to give myself light when I need to fetch wood. It really is a pretty versatile tool that you can use for just about anything. Since you don’t need to screw it in you can just move this to wherever you need it without hassle.
Most commonly these days this is a tool that would be used by historic reenactors; especially those who do encampments with large tents. This could be used in a large tent, like I do, to hang a lantern for light, or to hang a coat or even backpack.
It features a veined twist in the center to give it a little embellishment. The hanger measures around 12 1/2″ from the post.
The tent post hanger has a wax finish and is not painted. The wax finish will give it a protective coating but it’s not intended to be directly exposed to the weather.
